Children and Fantasy Violence?

kidsplayingknights

If you’re a concerned parent, you’ve probably taken time to consider the issue of fantasy violence, toy weapons, and violent media. It’s a complicated and thorny deal, and there’s definitely no “one size fits all families” solution, but GHP author Armand Inezian has taken a crack at talking about it (particularly the “fantasy” part of fantasy violence) in his newest guest post “Mama Let Your Children Grow Up to be Monster Slayers” at the Fang-tastic Books Blog. Please consider dropping by and giving your own perspective on this sometimes- difficult issue for parents. Armand (who is a father of two himself) is very interested to hear what others have to say, and it will also put you in a lottery to win a copy of his book, VampCon.

What connects Edgar Allan Poe, John Milton, Herman Melville, and Gavriel Navarro?

… they’re all contributors of ‘crown stanzas’ to the forthcoming collection of Glosa poetry, Dead to Rights, by Canadian poet, Alain C. Dexter.

Take a look at the back cover for some more contributors…

Some of these names were unexpected, and some unknown to me. Here’s one example, a  13th-century poet making something comeback: Rumi.

Rumi (1207-1273) is enjoying a huge surge in popularity on Facebook and other social media sites, perhaps because of his quotability.  Jalāl ad-Dīn Muḥammad Balkhī, Mevlānā in Turkish, was a Persian mystic and poet who lived in Konya, Anatolia. An Islamic teacher and jurist, his life was transformed when he met Shams e-Tabrizi, a dervish who’d been awaiting his disciple all his life. Known for spontaneous public outpourings of ghazals, Persian verse, Rumi spent twelve years street-rapping six volumes of his master work, the Masnavi: his major theme, union with the Beloved, from whom we have cut ourselves off and yearn to return. His shrine in Konya is one of Turkey’s most popular pilgrimage and tourist sites.

What’s the best superhero power? The ones they don’t talk about?

Superhero wonder woman

A superhero, yesterday.

There’s a great article up at Roxanne’s Realm at the moment. We all know superheroes who can fly or — not thinking of anyone in particular — can shoot webs and demonstrate spidey sense. Sometimes, if you dig a little deeper, there are other superpowers at work, ones that might not be talked about so much, or feature in the action dolls, but are vital to our enjoyment of the stories.

Did you realize that Doctor Who has superpowers just as much as Spiderman and The Hulk?

VampCon author, Armand Inezian, lists his top 5 unacknowledged (but vital) superpowers in his article here. Go read it now!

Sneek peek of 2013 release: Dead to Rights: a circularity of glosas

Here’s what I believe is called a cover reveal. I feel the term implies there should be some fancy webpage scripting that slides away a covering silk sheet accompanied by a drum roll. Well, I don’t know how to do that, so I’ll give the image to you straight.

Glosas

Cover artwork by Karri Klawiter. Some back cover text yet to work out.

This is Dead to Rights: a Circularity of Glosas, a collection by Canadian poet, Alain C. Dexter, of  a mind-bendingly fun form of poetry known as the glosa . It will be partnered by a novella from Elaine Stirling called Dead Edit Redo which tells the (fictional?) story of how the glosas came to be written. Nothing is quite as it first appears, and that is all part of the huge charm of this pairing.

I’ve written some more about these books, and the real, possibly also metafictional, but always impressive Gavriel Navarro in my post last month entitled: What is a Glosa and Why Should You Care?

Having earlier today published worldwide a book set in Cardiff (Wales) , it makes me feel very international to realise that in addition to several books set in parts of America, we have a book set in Belfast and Northern Ireland, one in the Scottish Highlands of Lochaber, another in the English not-so-highlands of Bedfordshire, and Dead Edit Redo is set in Ontario. Where next? Well, let’s not forget Mesoamerica and the story, told in verse, of the real nature of the Mayan Longcount calendar. You’ve just got time to read it (details here) before the world ends in a couple of days. Hope to see you on the other side…

Our YA robot book is now available in North America

Another message from Crustias Scattermush, the Senior Repositarian at our sister site: The Repository of Imagination.

Tales of imagination and wonder for 9-14 year olds…

The Repository of Imagination has entranced sentient life-forms throughout the galaxy and through alternate worlds of magic and mystery for tens of thousands of years, thrilling and informing its users in equal measure.

Now the Repository is opening a branch on your world. As well as publishing books by human authors, in 2013 the Repository branch will operate A Tale for a Tale:  young authors can tell a tale for display on the website, and in return, we will provide a story sphere from our off-world archive.

Our first book is already available for sampling and for purchase. It is written by human author Colin R. Parsons from the country known as Wales. Colin’s book, Crank Tech One: Destruction, is a cautionary tale of what can happen if you meddle in affairs beyond your understanding. A young man discovers an abandoned robot. Before long, the robot is out of control, rampaging through Cardiff city center and leaving police officers in embarrassing positions. You can read more about Crank Tech One here and can sample the book for free by clicking this link. The book is available in both American and British dialects, and I am grateful for the assistance given to us by inhabitants of both those countries.

Our second book, to be published early in 2013, is a selection of 32 tales from the Repository translated by human Gill Shutt. Here’s a sneak peek of the cover…

I have more to say over on the Repository website here. For now, I bid you good day and wish you a happy Christmas.
