The Death of the Wave

Here’s the cover for the forthcoming title, The Death of the Wave by G.L. Adamson. This book is its own thing, but if you wanted a simple comparison, I would describe it as a literary version of The Hunger Games.

We’re busy working hard on the next round of books at the moment. Don’t forget our existing great range of books, though. There’s a ‘Two Books for Two Bucks’ deal on Thomas Rydder’s supernatural thriller titles and a competition to win his books open until the end of the month (see here for more details).

Keep checking the website for details of pre-Christmas deals.

I’ll leave you with a tiny taster of The Death of the Wave:

“I had sent the words out into the world and there is no going back.

For it is the words that defines immortality.

It is the mere fact that the words exist at all.

I was to save the people no matter the cost.

And if I die, I will live on under my name.

For I am words and words know how to wait.”

Today we are proud to announce the launch of Restless Souls: 3 dark fables by Thomas Rydder, the author of supernatural thriller, The Clearing.

Three dark fables of America’s unwanted souls: gutsy thrillers spiced with the paranormal.

DO UNTO OTHERS (short story) – Jeremy is a street hood, lawless and unchained. When he is wronged by a local businessman, it becomes his mission to seek revenge. But his new enemy has friends – ones that don’t take kindly to intruders.

COLORS (novelette) – Harrison Street: attorney, biker wannabe, coward. When he finds the bike of his dreams, it seems too good to be true. It is.

SIMONA SAYS (novella) – Simona has had it rough. Death, disenchantment, and disappointment are all part of her life. She wants to be happy for a change, and she’s willing to do just about anything to find some. Anything.

In this mini-collection, supernatural thriller writer Thomas Rydder demonstrates again how he can take genuine American characters and settings, and then blend them with the darkest fantasy.

Hurry! Get this horror-thriller for only 99c while you can.

Reaper’s Walk: Hellstone is a manic-paced action adventure featuring werewolves, vampires, demons and far, far worse. Through Saturday 29th you can get the Kindle version from Amazon.com for just 99c.

This book was beautifully written with imagination and creativity. You get all the gory details most authors do not want to write into their books. — 5-star review.

Caught up in feuds, wars, grudges, curses, and a desperate quest to find the Circle of Stones, are a pair of normal young women and their grandmothers. Except… it turns out that the women aren’t normal, and neither are their grandmothers.

“It is brilliant the way that the author has woven together so many monsters and it works. If you like vampire stories it has it, if you like werewolf stories it has that also, or demons or witches or voodoo hoodoo it has all that also…and it all works/flows together seamlessly.” — 5-star review.

Meanwhile the Grim Reaper is on his way to collect one of their souls…

And for a limited time, all this for only 99c

“This book is an easy read and I just couldn’t put it down! I can’t wait for the next one!” — 5-star review.

GUEST POST: ‘Book covers sell the story?’ by Paula Limbaugh

Today we welcome Paula Limbaugh for a guest post about the importance of book covers. Paula’s words are not all comfortable reading for us at Greyhart but eloquently makes the point that in order to attract a reader, a book needs the right cover and sales pitch. But what brings in one reader will do the opposite for another.

We’re always interested to know what you think of our books, and the covers are a key part of that. If you’ve got an opinion, we’d love to hear from you.

Over to Paula…

Whether, online or in an actual bookstore the first thing that grabs my attention is the cover.  Walking through the aisles of B&N it’s like they are all screaming “Me, me, pick me!”    If the artwork is good I will read the synopsis, if not I will pass it up unless I recognize the author or if the title is exceptionally catchy.

Recently I was given a copy of VampCon   by Armand Inezian to read as part of the Read… Review… Repeat…! | Greyhart Press book program.   I had asked Tim Taylor to choose a book for me and this was it.  Upon seeing the cover I thought, “UGH, I don’t want to read this!”  I just thought magna.  It took a day or two before I decided to give it a go.  Boy was I ever wrong to judge a book by its cover!  It immediately grabbed my attention and turned out to be a brilliant tale.

VampConFinal_sRGB72_400pxw

This got me thinking “How many other great reads have I passed up?”  So I decided to conduct a little experiment. I showed the cover of VampCon to several people and asked if they would pick up this book upon seeing the cover.  Out of 11 people only 2 said yes, one was an eighteen year old and the other twenty two.  The others asked ranged between 25 to 60 years old, judging by the artwork alone they didn’t think the story would interest them.  Going back and telling the same people what the book was about, I had 5 interested in reading the book.  Next I went on Amazon.com and randomly chose books whose covers were unappealing to me and began reading the synopsis of each.  I actually found quite a few that sound promising.

To complete my little study of the book cover I contacted Jeff Menapace author of the Bad Games series  to find out what determines a book cover for him.  He said he usually has a look or mood  that he’s going for and will even find images online that convey his thoughts, these he will pass on to the artist and let the “magic happen”.  For me the Bad Gamescover makes me wonder what’s going on inside that house, what tale awaits under the cover?

I guess now that I’ve opened my eyes and shed the prejudice; I shall request Reaper’s Walk: Hellstone by Don Franklin to read next.  Again, magna popped into my head when seeing the cover, but who knows what gem I may find!

Reaper’s Walk

FLASH UPDATE!!  Well surprise, surprise, I checked my e-mail late last night and there was Reaper’s Walk: Hellstone waiting for me.  I had asked Tim to choose another book for me and this was it!  I guess I don’t have to request it after all.  I began reading and so far, so very, very good.  Never ever will I judge a book by its cover.

Paula Limbaugh

Paula Limbaugh

Hello, my name is Paula Limbaugh and I am from the US.  I live in a Chicago IL suburb with my husband Dave.  I am a contributor for Horror Novel Reviews | Honesty in the Terror  and have been participating in the Read… Review… Repeat…! | Greyhart Press program.  Back in July I was privileged to be one of the proofreaders for Iain Rob Wright’s novel The Housemates .  There are more books on my TBR list than there is time, but I’m going to try!

Thanks for reading.

A day of Death, a day of Pride…

Twelve years ago today, tragedy was visited on the populations of New York  City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania.

It wasn’t an act of God, but rather of the Godless. Desperate to gain attention for a despicable cause, a group of radicals planned an audacious attack to maim and kill indiscriminately, and they carried it out in precise and deadly fashion. It was an deed so cowardly in its concept that the entire civilized world reeled in shock and dismay.

911-1

Through the horror of it all, people of different races, religions and backgrounds banded together in a concerted effort to simply survive. And survive we did, but we lost so many. So many good souls, who had moments before been doing what we all do in the course of the day.

911-4

Some of the grim statistics:

Total number killed in attacks in New York: 2,753

Number of firefighters and paramedics killed: 343

Number of NYPD officers: 23

Number of Port Authority police officers: 37

Number of WTC companies in the towers that lost people: 128

Number of employees who died in the two Towers: 2,016

Number of civilians killed in four planes: 227

Number of civilians killed on Flight 93: 33

Number of nations whose citizens were killed in attacks: 115

Number of families who got no remains: 1,717

Estimated units of blood donated to the New York Blood Center:36,000

Number of people who lost a spouse or partner in the attacks:1,609

Estimated number of children who lost a parent: 3,051

Number of funerals attended by Rudy Giuliani in 2001: 200

Tons of debris removed from site: 1,506,124

Days after 9/11 that the U.S. began bombing Afghanistan: 26

Economic loss to New York in month following the attacks: $105 billion

Estimated cost of cleanup: $600 million

Estimated amount donated to 9/11 charities: $1.4 billion

Estimated amount of money raised for funds dedicated to NYPD and FDNY families: $500 million

Average benefit already received by each FDNY and NYPD widow:$1 million

Estimated number of New Yorkers suffering from post-traumatic-stress disorder as a result of 9/11: 422,000

What this band of savages failed to take into account was the resolve and resiliency of the American people. A fighting spirit so deep, that 33 brave passengers on Flight 93 met their death while battling the terrorists aboard, causing the doomed airplane to crash in a Pennsylvania field.

911-93

It was a moment of terror and confusion, but in the end, we as a country turned it into something more. We united as one, turned our collective faces to the west, and sought out those who had desecrated our shores. Country-western superstar Toby Keith said it best:

Soon as we could see clearly
Through our big black eye
Man, we lit up your world
Like the Fourth of July.

911-6

Since we began our counter-attack a little over three weeks after 9/11, we have killed thousands of those responsible, and in 2011, their insidious leader (I’ll not honor his memory by mentioning his name) was gunned down in his pajamas by a team of our finest and bravest, the U.S. Navy Seals.

Is the battle over? No, sadly not. As long as evil strides the earth, strife will continue, and the beloved will fall in battle. But through it all, remember one thing:

We are a God-fearing nation, strong and proud, and we will fight to the last man, woman and child to keep it that way. Our ancestors worked, bled and died to make this a nation of freedom – freedom to live, to prosper, and to pursue our own dreams. And to anyone who dares interfere with that dream, BEWARE. The bright lights of the Fourth of July will be your fate, as well.

God bless all who lost their lives that fateful day, and may he visit his strength upon all who survived them and mourn.

And God bless the U.S.A.

Gill Shutt

I heard some tragic news yesterday and it is my sad task to pass this on to you now. Gill Shutt died suddenly on Monday, 19th August.

To many of you who follow Greyhart Press and our offshoot, The Repository of Imagination, Gill was one of our authors. In fact, she was much more than that. To me she was a driving force of imagination, a sounding board, editor, ally, and a friend. Several of our published books were initially read and commented on by Gill. Publishing, though, is sometimes like an iceberg: there is a lot of work that goes on under the water that readers never see. Gill was always ready to help out with these unglamorous tasks and read many manuscripts that we decided not to publish, which is a vital task for any publisher.

My first contact with Gill was when she submitted some poetry. We were closed to submissions but Gill sent her poetry anyway. We didn’t publish poetry, but that didn’t put Gill off. I read her manuscript, fully intending to reject it, but I wanted to skim the first few pages so I could at least give some constructive and encouraging feedback along with my rejection. Of course, I kept on reading, right to the end. I eventually published her manuscript under the title, The Legends of Light.

The book Gill was most eager to get published was her collection of short fantasy and science fiction stories she called Alien Legends. One of the stories mentioned an alien organisation called the Repository of Imagination. I loved that concept. I wanted that to be the glue that bound her collection, and I wanted to make the Repository real. I remember a slightly nervous phone call where I tried to persuade her to rework every story in the book to fit with this expanded concept. Gill was unsurprisingly reluctant at first but soon took to her task with great enthusiasm. She had that kind of mind that could leap and bound to new heights. Not every writer is capable of that. Oh, no! I knew then that she was a writer that could go on to great success.

New website banner 05flat

There was so much more to come. Gill’s poetry was widely published and she was looking forward to being a part of the NewCon Press launch event for the Looking Landwards anthology in October which carried a story from her.

Her current project was to act as editor for an anthology she called Weird Legends, a task I know she was relishing.

I was privileged to read Gill’s unpublished novel about the Welsh schoolboy who invents an alternate reality machine in science class, the stories of Altair Jones, Welsh space adventurer, and her collection of children’s horror stories. Her stories could be gritty, were always inventive, and carried a unique charm.

And Gill achieved all this despite suffering terribly from fibromyalgia. She would often talk of the ‘fibro fog’ that clouded her writing at times, but she persevered through all that.

But of course there was more to Gill than being a writer and editor. She often talked about her family. When we discussed possible stories for the Repository of Imagination, her benchmark was always ‘would I want my children to read this?’ And it is with her family that my thoughts and condolences are during this difficult time.

Gill Shutt 300dpi eBookGoodbye, Gill. I miss you already.
